Personal Experience
Joseph has headed various National Parks and Conservation Areas under Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) from 1990 to 2007. In his retirement, he has remained passionate and committed to conservation in his subregion. He has helped to organize the community to set up Kayirabwa Chimpanzee Conservancy to protect more than 100 chimpanzees which are inhabiting Kihaimira Central Forest Reserve (540 ha), private forest patches and people’s gardens around it. He has also helped establishment of two other forested conservancies in his region. He is involved in community projects for rural development, livelihood improvement, environmental sustainability and knowledge transfer. He has wide experiences of learning from Eastern and Southern Africa.
He has been recognized by UWA as an Honorary Wildlife Officer. Together with like-minded colleagues across Uganda, he was one of the Founder members of Umoja Wildlife Conservancies of Uganda (UWCU) in 2021. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree of Makerere University in Biological Sciences, Postgraduate Diploma in Wildlife Management and Certificate in Land Use Planning for Protected Areas among others. He is a writer and has participated in high profile international conferences such as the African Protected Area Congress (APAC) in Kigali in 2022.
